The Waboba Hainan Surf and Skate

Combining surfing, skateboarding and multimedia in a single beach event.

Venue: Houhai Bay, Hainan
Date: March, 2011

The Hainan Surf and Skate is now seeking sponsors.

If you would like to position your brand at the maximum cool end of the fast-growing China market, contact Brendan at Surfing Hainan for a sponsorship pack.

Adventures in Cyberspace
At the last count, China had more than 380 million internet users.

65% of Chinese netizens use online video websites.

56.3% of internet users said they "got to know brands through online channels".

58.7% actually made purchase decisions based on user-generated online info (compared to only 19% in the US).

Even when not making a purchase, 89.9% of users still pay attention to online word of mouth.

This info is from a presentation by Mindy Zhang.

A hot wind, free-flow beer, the rumble and click as a skateboard gets airborne, and explosions of light as the March sun bounces off the crisp longboard

waves in Houhai Bay. If all goes according to plan, this will be the scene at the Hainan Surf and Skate, March 2011, an event combining longboard surfing with skateboarding and adventures in multimedia, all on a whitesands beach on China's Hainan Island.

Surf, Skate and Videotape
We conceived the Surf and Skate in response to the success of our other event, the Surfing Hainan Open. Last year's open went so well we realised that there is room enough for at least two annual events of this kind.

This is China, after all, with one of the world's fastest-growing consumer markets, and interest here in beach leisure has never been greater.

If you will excuse the pun, the aim with the Hainan Surf and Skate is to catch a wave. We will be providing live online commentary of the surfing and skateboarding competitions in Chinese and English, and uploading videos from the beach throughout the event. On top of this, we will be hosting a video competition, all with a view to taking the event viral in the amazing world of Chinese cyberspace.

Surf and SkateTo get the ball rolling (and to leave plenty of room for improvement when it comes to the video competition) Brendan from Surfing Hainan and Nate from Cholo Skate have made a short video.

We had some amazing video contributions at the last Surfing Hainan Open, and the aim at the Surf and Skate is to build an event that specifically produces viral content for the China market with the sponsors' brands and products embedded within.

Each video we upload during the event will include a sponsor's brand, logo or product, and the guidelines for the video competition will inform people that they gain extra points if they can get the sponsors’ products or logos into the video footage in a cool, fun or irreverent way.

Our online content will be aimed at both English and Chinese-language viewers, and we will be employing a Chinese journalist during the event to write live commentary and press releases and liaise with the Chinese media.

We already have a prospective headline sponsor for the event - Waboba, makers of the ball that bounces on water - but we still have space for several extra co-sponsors.

For more information about our plans for the event, contact Brendan Sheridan at Surfing Hainan and ask for a sponsorship pack.
